Why Major Sporting Events Create Experiences Beyond the Stadium

Major sporting events have a way of taking over a city for a few days. Hotels fill up, restaurants stay busy, and entire schedules begin to revolve around a game, a concert, or a moment that people don’t want to miss. By the time kickoff arrives, there’s usually an entire calendar of activity already underway, from customer dinners and hospitality events to watch parties, sponsor activations, and countless informal gatherings.

San Francisco has operated this way for a long time. Dreamforce doesn’t begin and end at Moscone Center, Superbowl Weekend wasn’t confined to Levis Stadium in Santa Clara, and FIFA World Cup 2026 was no exception. The larger the event, the more likely it is to create its own ecosystem in the San Francisco Bay Area, with different neighborhoods, venues, and businesses serving different parts of the audience throughout the week. We’ve seen that firsthand over the years through conferences, concerts, NBA All-Star & Superbowl events, and now FIFA World Cup.

For event planners and brands, this creates an opportunity to build programming around the main event rather than compete with it. Some people have tickets to the game, while others are in town for business meetings, sponsor events, or client entertainment. Many simply want to spend an afternoon surrounded by other fans. The most successful experiences tend to account for all of those audiences at the same time.

Major Events Create Entire Ecosystems

More Ways to Participate

Bank of America’s FIFA World Cup 2026™ Breakaway Tour was a good example of how these events can come together. For the USA vs. Bosnia and Herzegovina match, The Midway hosted watch parties in Ride and Gods & Monsters alongside soccer activations, live music, merchandise, memorabilia displays, food spreads, and hospitality experiences throughout the campus. Guests could spend the afternoon watching the match, exploring the activations, or doing a little bit of both, depending on how they wanted to experience the day.

Major sporting events provide brands with visibility, but the surrounding events provide something equally valuable: time. A stadium experience is largely structured around the event itself. The surrounding programming gives people more time to engage with a brand, spend time with colleagues or clients, and experience a city while they’re there. That creates opportunities that simply don’t exist once the match begins.

Venue selection becomes particularly important when multiple audiences are involved. Fan experiences, client entertainment, employee events, and hospitality programs all have different requirements, which is why flexibility tends to matter as much as capacity. A venue that can accommodate several environments simultaneously often gives planners more options and guests more reasons to stay.

Looking Beyond Match Day

For many organizations, the opportunity extends well beyond match day itself. A single sporting event can support an entire week of programming that includes executive dinners, customer gatherings, employee celebrations, hospitality events, and closing receptions. Cities that regularly host major events tend to become very good at accommodating this rhythm, and San Francisco has spent decades building the infrastructure to do exactly that.

As more international sporting events come through the Bay Area in the years ahead, brands will continue looking for ways to create experiences around them. For event planners, that means thinking beyond match day and considering the entire calendar that develops around it.
