Inside Modal Runtime: A Technical Conference with a Creative Edge

Part technical conference, part creative gathering, Modal Runtime transformed The Midway with metallic installations, bold digital graphics, custom environments and music throughout the campus. The event brought an unmistakable sense of contemporary tech culture to the venue, pairing its industrial design with lush outdoor spaces and relaxed social environments.
Held on October 1, 2026, Runtime was Modal’s inaugural conference dedicated to the engineering challenges of deploying and scaling AI in production. Bringing together engineers and industry leaders, the program explored the infrastructure, tools and real-world challenges behind today’s AI applications.
An Arrival That Set the Tone
The experience began outside the venue, where a permitted street closure extended the event footprint. A clear tented entrance, silver RVs, tiered seating and sculptural installations established Runtime’s distinctive visual identity before attendees reached the main conference spaces.
Bold graphics, metallic surfaces and custom-built structures gave the outdoor environment an industrial, digitally inspired character. Against The Midway’s greenery and surrounding architecture, the installations created a striking setting for arrivals, conversations and gathering throughout the day.
Technical Sessions Across the Campus
Ride served as the conference’s mainstage, with theater-style seating, large-scale LED visuals and dramatic lighting. The room’s production design carried Runtime’s graphic identity into the presentations, creating a cohesive experience between the outdoor installations and indoor program.
Additional presentations took place in Gods & Monsters and CarreSel, allowing attendees to move between sessions and gathering areas throughout the venue. The multi-space format supported the technical program while giving the conference room for different experiences beyond the mainstage.
A Social Experience Built Into the Conference
Runtime’s creative character extended into its hospitality spaces. DJs, gourmet food and informal lounges brought a relaxed energy to the event, while the Patio featured additional seating and a merchandise station. An elevated rooftop lounge offered another place to gather, with views across the campus.
These environments were an integral part of the event’s design, giving attendees places to connect between presentations and spend time together outside the technical sessions. The combination of custom installations, music and outdoor hospitality gave Runtime the atmosphere of a contemporary creative gathering while maintaining the substance of a technical conference.
