Hasta La Raíz: Mission Housing Celebrates 55 Years at The Midway

For more than half a century, Mission Housing Development Corporation has been part of San Francisco’s effort to keep people rooted in the communities they call home.
On September 3, Mission Housing brought that history together at The Midway for Hasta La Raíz: 55 Years Rooted in Community, a sold-out anniversary celebration honoring the organization’s past while looking toward the future of affordable housing and community in San Francisco.
The evening brought together residents, supporters, community partners and civic leaders, including former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and California State Senator Scott Wiener, for a celebration that extended across The Midway campus.
A 55-Year San Francisco Story
Founded in 1971, Mission Housing grew out of community organizing in San Francisco’s Mission District. Today, the nonprofit owns or manages 35 buildings and is developing approximately 1,000 additional affordable homes across the city.
The anniversary recognized that history while supporting what comes next. Mission Housing’s 55th anniversary year also introduced its Cultivation Network, created to bring together community members, philanthropic supporters and corporate partners around resident services, organizational sustainability and the organization’s broader work in San Francisco.
Turning a Gala Into a Celebration
Hasta La Raíz showed how a gala or fundraising event at The Midway can build beyond the main program, using different spaces, entertainment and experiences to shape the evening.
Arrival began outdoors on the Patio with a tuxedoed DJ before continuing into Gallery, where guests encountered a red carpet and step-and-repeat along with Mission Housing anniversary merchandise.
Ride became the center of the evening, with banquet tables, gourmet food stations, bars, lounge areas and a photo booth across the main floor, plus additional seating in the mezzanine. The mainstage hosted the program and live music, while dancers and drummers brought performances directly onto the floor among guests.
The result was a gala that still had the structure of a formal anniversary gathering, but with more opportunities for guests to move, explore and celebrate throughout the evening.
A Gathering Rooted in San Francisco
Mission Housing’s work has evolved considerably since 1971, but its focus remains closely tied to San Francisco and the people who live here. Bringing residents, housing advocates, supporters and civic leaders together for the organization’s 55th anniversary made the evening as much about that community as the milestone itself.
It was also a return to The Midway. Mission Housing previously held its 53rd anniversary celebration here in 2024, making Hasta La Raíz another chapter in a relationship that has grown alongside the organization.
For The Midway, hosting gatherings like this is an important part of being a San Francisco event venue. The campus regularly welcomes conferences, company gatherings and large-scale productions, but it also provides a place for the organizations working within the city to bring their communities together.
